Gas Log Set Options

Realistic Minus the Work

You have two options when it comes to choosing gas logs for an existing wood-burning fireplace: vented gas log sets and vent-free. Our first recommendation is that you seriously consider a fireplace insert complete with a gas log burner. These are easily-installed units which are more practical than their counterparts and do not present any of the problems associated with vent-free or vented gas logs.

If you choose to go with a log set, think about whether you want it more for decorative purposes or for heat. Vented gas logs are rated as a decorative appliance–designed to operate in a wood burning fireplace–with the damper fully opened. Vent-free gas logs are rated as a heating appliance–designed to operate in a vent-free or wood burning fireplace, which does not vent to the outdoors. In addition, most vent-free gas logs use less gas than vented log sets and will provide more heat in the home because none of the heat is vented to the outdoors.

While vent-free gas logs are prone to a few issues, they come in a variety of sizes and styles to fit your home’s needs. Again, we ask that you talk with us first about the risks of using gas logs before choosing them for your home.
